MDNR SEEKS TO REDUCE MUTE SWAN POPULATION
MI Natural Resources Commission Approves Agency Plan
The Michigan Natural Resources
Commission has voted to approve a
Michigan Department of Natural
Resources Mute Swan Management Plan
that seeks to reduce the state
population of the notoriously aggressive
and territorial, though some would also
say elegant, Cygnus olor from an estimated current statewide
population of 15,000 to 2,000 by 2030.
The February 10th vote of the Commission followed a
lengthy and emotional debate between various animal
rights groups and the wildlife conservation community,
who had enthusiastically supported the MDNR plan.
Groups representing the interests of Michiganís large
hunting community had argued that the non‐native mute
swans are successfully out‐competing prized native duck
species for critical breeding grounds.
The MDNR cited the birdís ability to damage aquatic
ecosystems by consuming large quantities of ecologically
critical submerged aquatic vegetation as the primary factor
in seeking to reduce statewide numbers of the invasive,
though attractive native of the Eurasian continent.   (from Feb ML&SA Newsletter)
